Fraction City
Complementary Mathematics / Fraction City
Using the same format as the Fluency Anchors and Grade Level Overviews, the Fraction City series consists of five tightly cloned forms (forms A through E, with corresponding answer keys) which can be used as instructional guides, review assignments and even assessments. The 5- series format allows students the opportunity to learn and fully understand the content and then to practice, polish and become proficient across that content. Fraction City addresses the four operations that can be used between and among fractional values as well as the most common relationships, connections and conversions associated with fractions.
The Fraction City series also continues the practice of condensing the essential knowledge and skills associated with the topic to a single page. Having all of the expectations viewable across a single page allows both teachers and students to grasp the total range of the expectations as well as providing a status check of current progress toward those expectations. The design of this series encourages students to take a close look at the individual questions being posed before automatically launching into the typically associated algorithm -as many of the items can be answered by inspection if students use the laws of mathematics.
We typically use small numbers to provide an opportunity to demonstrate the understanding of large concepts. By the end of grade 5, students should be able to complete most of the work contained within a Fraction City form (with limited support). By mid-grade 6 and beyond, students should be able to complete a randomly chosen form of the series within 45 minutes and with a minimum of 90% accuracy.
